Using a jobs finder
Posted on May 31, 2016 at 2:12 pm
Many recruitment companies and jobs boards have websites that you can search to find your ideal job. Often there is a number of ways you can search for jobs i.e. by location, salary, job type etc. When carrying out a job search, unless you are adamant that you know what you want to do, be broad with your search. Do not limited the jobs too much by being specific. Everyone usually fills in a job role, but if you don’t mind or don’t know what you want to do then you could fill in the location and salary you need and start from there. You may find a number of job roles open up to you that previously you had not even considered.
Often you will need to register to search for jobs or to apply for roles, there are many free ones out there so be sure to check the benefits you will get if you chose a paid for site.

Support in setting up your own business
Posted on April 25, 2016 at 10:28 pm
Many people dream of setting up their own business. Often due to financial commitments or family commitments make it very hard for someone to take the plunge from employment to self employment.
If you have an idea for a business you would like to set up then why not seek some independent advice about how you would go about doing it. Talk to your local council to see if there are any groups or course you could attend that will talk you through the ins and outs of setting up on your own and find out if it is possible. If you need start up capital a bank or private investor may be able to help but they would need usually to see a solid business plan that details the products and service you want to market, competition levels as well as your projected figures that you expect to make.

Why consider supply teaching?
Posted on March 8, 2016 at 1:21 pm
Supply teachers play a crucial role within a school. They are there to cover teachers who are off ill, on training courses or absent for other reasons. They must be able to go in to a classroom and quickly take control of the class. They may never have been in to that school let alone class before, but must be able to carry out the tasks in hand to a high standard.
There are many benefits to being a supply teacher, below I have listed a few:
Wages – the daily rate you are on as a supply teacher is usually quite a bit higher than that of a permanent teacher
Flexibility – you can often chose when you do and do not want to work meaning if you need a day or a week off you can chose not to accept supply work for that period
Work load – you may not have to plan or mark work if only in a class for a day or morning / afternoon meaning that there is no or little work to do when you go home.

Perks of supply teaching
Posted on December 16, 2015 at 9:56 pm
Supply teaching can be a very rewarding job. If you have qualified as a teacher and looking for work quickly or if you have been employed as a full time teacher and are looking for something different then I would recommend trying supply teaching.
Supply teacher jobs vary, some may involve you working in the same school for a number of weeks whereas others may require you to work at a different school every day. As a supply teacher you will usually get paid more than a full time employed teacher, meaning that you may only need to work 3 or 4 days a week to make your salary up to that of what you would have earned in a permanent position. If you find your current teaching job stressful, supply teaching may be just the break you need allowing you to work with a variety of pupils and often not having to worry about the planning / marking / reports aspect.

A change in career
Posted on November 29, 2015 at 10:34 pm
Sometimes you may decide that it’s time to have a career change. For some, this is very risky and it may mean giving up a job to venture in to the unknown or even to have to return to education to train for a new career. If this is the case it can create a few issues mostly around money. If you are going back in to education, not only may you have to fund the cost of the course yourself but you may also not be able to work or have to substantially reduce your hours. This can have a massive effect on the household income and often is enough to put many people off.
If you are ready for a career change and in a situation where it is possible then why not explore a few different avenues you could take to progress in to the job you want to.

Challenges as a teacher
Posted on October 31, 2015 at 11:04 pm
Many schools within the UK, now have between 25 and 35 children in a class and with such a wide range of abilities it can be hard to teach everyone exactly what they need to know to improve their education and to help them pass their exams.
Speaking to a number of teachers, they have stressed the affect high class numbers has on an individual pupil’s learning and many of them strongly believe that more classroom help is needed in schools where class numbers are so large.
Most classes with have a TA (Teaching Assistant) but if the TA is having to spend time with one or two pupils, then the rest of the class is under the supervision of the teacher. This can be extreme challenging for many teachers and often contributes to the high percentage of teachers leaving the profession within their first year as a qualified teacher.

Controlling a classroom as a supply teacher
Posted on July 31, 2015 at 8:48 am
Supply teachers often have a pretty hard job when it comes to classroom control as some students play on the fact that this is not their normal teacher and therefore they assume they can get away with more than they usually might.
If you are starting a job as a supply teacher you must quickly gain control of the classroom right from the start. It may feel like you are going in with a hard hand but if you do not control situations quickly and effectively then you will find it much harder down the line to get the children working as they should.
If you feel that you are struggling with classroom control or simply want a little advice then you could speak to a fellow teacher or the head teacher. If you would rather speak to someone outside of the school then you could call the NUT helpline. If you are working as a supply teacher through a teaching recruitment agency then they will often have someone that you can speak to that will offer you tips on how to gain back control.

Interview Tips
Posted on January 28, 2015 at 1:35 pm
A job interview can be a stressful business and it’s easy for nerves to get the better of you. Good preparation before the interview is vital to ensure a good performance and knowing you are well prepared should keep any nervousness at bay.
Make sure you research both the company and the position you’re applying for. This allows you to ask relevant questions and is especially important if you’re switching from another industry. Take the time to practice answers to common interview questions. Interviewers often open by inviting you to talk about yourself. Prepare a good answer for this; they don’t want a rehash of your CV or application form!
Prepare some questions of your own, making sure to ask things that highlight any knowledge you have of the job. Also, you could ask about the values of the company. Make sure you’re well presented and arrive on time. Above all, keep calm and don’t rush when speaking.
